Xiamen is a scenic tourist port city which lies in the Southeast of China. It is under the direct jurisdiction of the provincial government of Fujian Province. As the political, economic and cultural center of the southern Fujian provincce, It is known for its pleasant weather, beautiful scenery and numerous historic sights, It is also one of the earliest Special Economic Zones in china and is usually praised as a Bright Pearl On the sea. |
Xiamen falls on longitude 118*04'04"E and latitude 24*26'46"N. The city of Xiamen is composed of 7 administrative districts,namely,Siming District,Jimei District,Xinglin District and Tongan District.The whole city covers an area of 1,565 square KM among which the area of Xiuamen Island takes up 132,50 square KM. The distance between the north and the south of Xiamen Island is 13.7 KM and 13 KM between the east and the west of the Island.According to statistics published in Xiamen Daily dated May 1st,2001, the population of the whole city now reachs 205 million. |
Situated to the west bank of the Taiwan straits, Xiamenport is an important transportation link at sea. It is about 695 nautical miles from Shanghai, 287 nautical miles from HongKong, 165 nautical miles from Kaosiung, 677 nautical miles from Manila, 816 nautical miles from Nagasaki, and 1650 nautical miles from Singapore. Xiamen port is an ice-free harbour which is characterised by broad and deep water as weel as little fog and deposit. The ten-thousand ton large ship can berth directly in its iner harbour without being influenced by the weather and the tides.

According to legend, Xiamen is the habitat for egrets in the remote ancient times. By cioncidence, the shape of the island looks like an egret, hence the name for Xiamen as egret island, egret islet, egret isle, egret city, egret ferry and egret gate. The straits between the Xiamen Island and Gulangyu Isle is called the Egret River.
